Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate different education proposals for teaching girls and young women in Brazil in the first decades of the XX century, using a theoretical approach based on Education History and Women’s History and documentary sources such as magazines and newspapers. During this period, there was an effort of the brazilian government for the structuralization and implementation of School Groups at capitals and important cities in every region of Brazil. Nevertheless, even with the increase of public schools focused on primary education which were associated with Modern Psychology and Hygienism, the lectures which were designed for girls and young women would prepare them to do domestic work and educate housewives and mothers. Meanwhile, we notice the production, circulation and appropriation of speeches and practices build inside feminist associations, specially by the Brazilian Federation of Women’s Progress and the Women’s Academic Union, which indicate other curriculum ideas and new acting roles for young women of every social background, contrary to what was taught at the public institutions. The access expansion to higher education and the cultural shift at the job market after 1930, among other factors, allowed new attributions and work activities to be conquered by young brazilian women.
