Abstract

This study focuses on guidelines and didactic pedagogical contents taught at Escola Normal Pedro II (ENPII) in Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, in the 1930s, by professor Judith Leão Castello. It uses texts authored by Professor Castello and her students, published in the Capixaba press – Diário da Manhã newspaper and periodicals Revista de Educação and Revista Vida Capichaba. From the intersection of the sources worked, also read against the grain, it analyzes the role of teacher Judith as a “cultural mediator” (Ginzburg; Castelnuovo; Poni, 1989) in the process of training normalists within the scope of ENPII, emphasizing the training of teachers in the traditional Catholic framework. Through the analysis of texts published by the teacher and her students on teaching and the actions developed by the Liga da Bondade, promoted by Castello, she highlights the spread of the Christian order to guide the identity and behavior of future teachers in Espírito Santo.
