Abstract

Continuing education is a crucial method for raising awareness among healthcare professionals regarding the proper disposal of Healthcare Waste (HW). However, studies on its impact remain limited. This study aimed to describe and evaluate the impact of a hospital education practice on Healthcare Waste. A quantitative, experimental, field trial design was employed to assess HW production before and after an intervention involving training for workers at a University Hospital in Paraná, Brazil, from 2021 to 2022. Secondary data on monthly HW disposal in kilograms and the number of patients per day were collected. Data were tabulated and assessed using the Mann-Whitney test. Following the intervention, a significant 67.34% reduction in HW production was observed, decreasing from 1.99 kg/patient/day pre-intervention to 0.65 kg/patient/day post-intervention (p=0.04). It was concluded that continuing education proved to be an effective practice for raising awareness among professionals and achieving a significant reduction in HW production.
