Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the support offered in the spiritual/religious dimensions to patients in intensive care units and their families. Methodology: Integrative literature review, based on the question: "what types of support in the spiritual/religious dimensions are offered to patients hospitalized in intensive care units and their families?" The identification of studies the descriptors Spirituality; Religion; Helping Behavior; Patients; Family; Family Relations and Intensive Care Units, in the following databases: National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library (SCIELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), EMBASE and SCOPUS. Evidence and thematic analyses were performed, which established three cores. Results: Ten articles were included, 90% analyzed as to quality of evidence level 5 and the thematic cores analyzed and discussed were: Challenges; Feelings and emotions; Potentialities and improvements. Conclusion: The supports in the spiritual and religious dimensions offered to ICU patients and their families are detection of spiritual suffering, by providing active listening and effective communication, evaluation of emotional and behavioral signs.
