Abstract

In Brazil, the inadequate characteristics of federal highways are responsible for the majority of traffic accidents. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of traffic engineering actions on road safety on the highway BR-101 located in Sergipe. This is a descriptive and analytical study, and the traffic accident data in the Km 95 to 145 section of the BR-101 highway were obtained through the Brazilian Federal Highway Police Database (location, date, time, vehicles involved, victims, type of accident). The data collection occurred in the period from 01/03/2009 to 02/28/2010, when duplication works and others improvements still had not been begun, and in the period from 01/03/2015 to 02/02/2016, when already concluded. The results showed that, after the conclusion of the actions, there was a significant reduction in the Unity Standard of Severity (30.5%). The rate of reduction of accidents was 30.4%. Also reduced the vehicles involved in 47%, victims injured in 27% and fatal in 54.5%. The accidents of the type frontal collision, rear and people trampling were those who presented bigger reduction rate. It was concluded that the traffic engineering works carried out had positive impacts on several road safety indicators.
