Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the perception of health professionals regarding the performance of the Veterinarian in Primary Health Care (PHC) and propose strategies for expanding/disseminating the role of the Veterinarian in health. It was a cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study, carried out with professionals from Basic Health Units (BHU), Health Coordinators and Managers of the Municipality of Princesa Isabel, Paraíba, located in the mesoregion of the sertão of Paraíba. For data constitution, a structured form was used, applied to 28 professionals, 22 professionals directly linked to the BHU and six involved with health management. 50% of the interviewees did not consider the monitoring of human health as a duty of the veterinarian and almost 70% of them never witnessed the activity of this professional in PHC. It was possible to observe that a large part of the group did not understand the role of the veterinarian in PHC and, when introduced to this professional, changed their perception, feeling the need for this professional to act in their daily work. In addition, it was observed that there is a need for more clarification on the form and fields of action of Veterinary Medicine, especially in PHC and One Health.
