Abstract

Amputation is the surgical or traumatic removal of a body segment being performed as a last resort, or last surgical possibility, with the purpose of improving the function of the affected limb and creating new perspectives, enabling quality of life for the amputee. The objective of this research was to characterize the cases of amputation resulting from traffic accidents carried out at the Raimundo Gobira Hospital in Teófilo Otoni, Minas Gerais, a regional reference in this type of procedure, from august 2012 to august 2019 associating their factors and causes. At 214 medical records were collected and analyzed in relation to the procedure and hospitalization in terms of gender, age, amputated organ, city of origin, length of hospital stay, time of amputation. Of the amputations resulting from traffic accidents, the predominance was male (97%), motorcycle accidents (81.4%) in the predominant age group 18 to 30 years (44%). Due to amputation procedures 76.74% remained hospitalized for up to four days. 58.14% of amputations occurred at the hand level, with the total number of finger amputations. Despite being the city with the largest population in the Teófilo Otoni region the proportion of amputees due to traffic accidents was only 23.26%. It is concluded that specific awareness actions must be implemented in the region of Vale do Mucuri, mainly with males, aiming to reduce these accidents that can compromise the quality of life and its potential in the labor activity.
