Abstract

The case of the doctor at the Hospital Universitário Evangelista de Curitiba, who became known as Doctor Death about ten years ago, was regarded in Brazil as a case of euthanasia. But, if there had been a condemnation, would it have actually been euthanasia? The general objective of this research was to investigate whether or not the case of physician is related to euthanasia and, as specific objectives: a) to explain which arguments were used in relation to the case; b) present the approach made by the media to the case of the Physician regarding the imposition of the term euthanasia; and c) demonstrate how the false understanding, the lack of knowledge of medical techniques, the lack of effective communication between doctors, patients and family members and the misunderstanding of acceptance of the finitude of life reflect in cases such as the one studied. Bibliographic research was used. The result: what could have happened were acts supported by medical literature, misunderstood by many, including the patients' families.
