Abstract

The contemporary global challenge is to ensure the protection of fundamental human rights and democracy. But current research shows that there is a great autocratic wave in the world, putting more and more countries and citizens at risk. Thus, in this context, we sought to understand the Brazilian reality of autocratization, asking ourselves what was the evolution of autocracy in Brazil between the years 2019 and 2022? To answer this question, we sought to define autocracy and democracy, explain the advance of autocracy in Brazil from 2019 onwards, identify factors that favor the advance of autocracy and delimit the Brazilian political context in the advance of autocracy. The methodology used was narrative review through the bibliographic method, using scientific articles, books, monographs, dissertations, among others, as well as statistical research carried out by the V-Dem Institute, and the conclusion was obtained using the deductive method. It was then concluded that Brazil went through a growing wave of autocratization and weakening of democratic characteristics, especially after Bolsonaro's election in 2018, but achieving an improvement in these characteristics with Lula's victory in the 2022 elections. alert in defense of democracy.
