Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the perception of civil police officers in Pará regarding mental health and occupational illness, investigating weaknesses in institutional psychosocial support policies. Furthermore, it seeks to propose improvements to optimize psychological care, reduce the impacts of occupational stress, and strengthen institutional strategies aimed at promoting these professionals’ well-being. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Documentary and bibliographic analyses were conducted, along with the application of structured questionnaires to 234 civil police officers and semi-structured interviews with 11 professionals from different sectors of the Civil Police. Quantitative data were analyzed statistically, while qualitative analysis followed the content analysis technique. The results show that violence and emotional overload significantly impact the mental health of civil police officers. Symptoms such as excessive fatigue, irritability, and social withdrawal were widely reported. The precariousness of psychosocial support, aggravated by the centralization of services in the capital, hinders access to adequate care. Moreover, institutional stigma discourages seeking psychological support, perpetuating occupational illness. High rates of moral harassment were also identified within the Police Institution, reinforcing the need for effective policies to combat this issue. It is concluded that the implementation of public policies, such as Law 14.531/2023, and the decentralization of support services are essential to mitigate the impacts of police work on mental health. The study highlights the need for institutional actions that expand access to psychological support and promote better working conditions for civil police officers.
