Abstract

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, popularized between 2008 and 2012 during Phase ONE of the Avengers movies, stood out for the strong presence of scientists such as Tony Stark, Bruce Banner and Jane Foster. These figures were central to the cultural phenomenon that captured millions of viewers in theatres. In this article, using an analysis protocol specific to entertainment movies, we analysed how science and scientists were represented in six movies by Marvel franchise. We identified sixteen scientist characters, third men and three women, representing eleven areas of scientific knowledge, divided into three categories, and characterized by ten different stereotypes, covering topics ranging from astrophysics to subjects in the areas of social sciences and humanities.
