Abstract

Brazilian black artists suffered from the erasure in the history of Brazilian art, were stereotyped through the gaze of “the other” and are made invisible in institutional art spaces in Brazil. This work aims to identify the confrontation that contemporary black visual artists use to combat institutional racism in Brazil, as well as to understand the Afrofuturist movement and the Afro Diasporic aesthetic and how they contribute to such confrontation. For this, a bibliographical review was made on Afrofuturism, Afro Diasporic aesthetics, stereotypes of blackness, whiteness, and Brazilian contemporary black visual artists. As a result of the review carried out, we point out that contemporary Brazilian black visual artists identify these processes, and influenced by the Afrofuturist movement and by the Afro diasporic aesthetic, they create an economic way of confronting institutional racism in Brazil. These strategies seek to change the narrative of their own history, rescuing the African heritage, occupying alternative spaces and independent spaces for the dissemination of black art.
