Abstract

It is known that foundations are the structural elements responsible for transmitting the loads of a building's structure to the ground in a safe and stable way. In this way, these elements have the function of distributing the weight of the construction appropriately, preventing the emergence of problems related to the stability and structural integrity of the building. That said, the general objective of this article is to investigate the emergence of pathologies caused by the wrong choice of the foundation element. To this end, we began with a thorough bibliographical review of the different types of foundation, emphasizing their structural particularities and their applications in various contexts. Subsequently, the main criteria considered in the choice/adoption of the type of foundation were discussed and analyzed, with emphasis on soil analysis, encompassing its support capacity, expansion and other geotechnical properties. Therefore, it can be stated that this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the crucial factors in selecting the type of foundation, offering valuable insights for professionals and academics in the field of civil engineering. Furthermore, it also contributes to optimizing projects and preventing problems in civil construction by highlighting the importance of choosing foundations appropriately from the design phase, dedicating itself to an in-depth analysis of the pathologies that affect foundations in civil construction.
