Abstract

Objective: To characterize hospital admissions due to external causes that occurred in Brazil in 2019. Methods: This is an ecological study on morbidity due to external causes, available in the Sistema de Informações Hospitalares (SIH/SUS). Results: In Brazil, in 2019, there were 1,240,252 hospitalizations with a predominance of falls (35.2%); most hospitalizations were men (67.5%), aged between 20 and 29 years (17.7%), race/brown color (52%); the Midwest was the region with the highest rate of hospitalization (746.7/100 thousand inhabitants); aggressions had the highest mortality rate (4.0) and the highest average expenditure per hospitalization in reais (1,616.69). Conclusion: It was evidenced, therefore, that external causes are a relevant factor of morbidity and mortality, mainly among adults, young men of the brown race/color and that falls and transport accidents are the most frequent injuries, however aggressions are more lethal.
