Abstract

Population aging has been increasing, with projections indicating that by 2060, one-quarter of Brazilians will be over 65 years old. Sexuality in old age, although beneficial, is still neglected, and the rise in sexual activity increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The objective of this project is to raise awareness among the elderly about STI prevention. This is an extension project carried out by medical students in partnership with the "Saúde na Praça" group. The intervention involved the application of questionnaires, an educational discussion about STIs, and the distribution of informational booklets. A total of 36 women participated, of whom 36.6% were unaware of the concept and transmission of STIs, and 57.1% had never received professional guidance. However, 83.3% recognized the importance of condoms, and 88.9% had already undergone preventive testing. After the intervention, 81.8% gave the highest rating to the knowledge acquired, and 100% valued addressing the topic. The project was effective in raising awareness about STIs, emphasizing the need to expand educational programs aimed at the elderly.
