Abstract

Objective: Analyze the factors involved in the development of depression, anxiety and the use of psychoactive substances (PS) by nursing professionals. Methods: It is an integrative review. Articles were collected from the BVS and SciELO databases using pre-defined strategies with the Boolean AND operator. The inclusion criteria were: articles available in full, in Portuguese, from 2015 to 2021. As exclusion, there were duplicates and gray literature. Results: The findings of this review found that the presence of depression is very present in nursing professionals, especially among men. The predominant substance identified in the surveys was alcohol, especially in binge consumption, this type was commonly associated with males. Substances such as tobacco, opioids and sedatives were also highlighted. Finally, it is noteworthy that the factors associated with these conditions were: work overload, unsatisfactory remuneration, professional devaluation, inadequate infrastructure for work, among others. Final considerations: It is possible to understand that nursing professionals are often in an unbalanced physical and mental state, which favors the use of substances as a form of refuge from these problems. Thus, it is extremely important to apply, review and/or improve care policies for professionals who show signs of physical and mental exhaustion, in order to avoid health problems as much as possible.
