Abstract

Nursing in the prison system: pregnancy and development of babies in

prison situation

ABSTRACT

Introduction: One of the professionals responsible for caring for the incarcerated population is the nurse, through the prison team, playing an important role in promoting and preventing the health of these individuals. Objectives: this study aims to describe the role of nurses in assisting pregnant women incarcerated in the Brazilian prison system, and to analyze the conditions of pregnancies, births and permanence of babies in prison women. Methodology: this is an integrative review, developed through a qualitative and exploratory nature. Data collection was performed using the Latin American and Caribbean databases in Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), in the integrated modality with the Regional Portal of the VHL (Virtual Health Library) and Google Academic. Results and Discussions: 714 articles were identified and only 15 met the inclusion criteria, which were grouped into 4 thematic categories: prison verses gettingation, right to health and public policies aimed at incarcerated pregnant women, role of nursing in the Brazilian prison system in attention to pregnant woman and the baby in prison, conditions of pregnancies, births, and permanence of babies of women inmates in Brazilian prisons. Conclusion: The role of nurses in caring for pregnant women in prison is to carry out nursing consultations for pregnant women and their babies, providing well-being, minimizing risks, with preventive actions, respecting the particularities of each one and actively participating in prenatal care . It is concluded that several consequences are brought about by pregnancy experienced in deprivation of freedom by both the mother and the child. Among them are: the lack of physical structure in prisons, shortage of medicines and medical professionals, lack of adequate nutrition, conditions of physical, sexual and obstetric violence often caused by inmates, prison security agents, police and health professionals .
