CONTRIBUIÇÃO DOS PRODUTOS NATURAIS PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DE TRATAMENTOS PARA O CÂNCER

Resumo

O câncer é um conjunto de doenças de origem celular, responsáveis por uma das maiores causas de morte no mundo. Baseado no potencial dos produtos naturais para a descoberta de novos compostos para o tratamento de doenças, o objetivo da presente revisão foi investigar a contribuição dos produtos naturais para o desenvolvimento de tratamentos para o câncer. Desde a década de 80 um total de 174 novos compostos com indicação para tratamento do câncer foram aprovados para comercialização, sendo que um total de 93 (53 %) eram produtos naturais ou derivados direto ou baseado neles. Devido a relativa facilidade de acesso às plantas, a maioria das descobertas de compostos anticâncer foram derivados de plantas, entre essas descobertas o fármaco obtido a partir da casca da Taxus brevifolia (paclitaxel) apresenta uma das histórias de maior sucesso na pesquisa baseada em plantas. No entanto, os organismos marinhos e microbiológicos também forneceram muitos compostos bioativos promissores com elevado potencial terapêutico como a trabectedina, os antibióticos citotóxicos da classe das antraciclinas e das enedyines. Em conclusão, os produtos naturais tiveram contribuição imprescindível para as descobertas de tratamentos para o câncer, com perspectiva de mais descobertas e inovações com o advento de novas tecnologias.
