Abstract

The municipality of São Miguel dos Campos, located 58 km from the capital Maceió-AL, had great participation in the growth of the cotton industry in the state. During the 20th century it was responsible for housing the spinning and textile factories "Vera Cruz" and "São Miguel", also known as Fábrica Sebastião Ferreira, both important manufacturing centers of the time. Therefore, the research was developed to understand the dynamics of these spaces, by means of bibliographic and documental surveys and field visits to the city, in addition to comparative studies on the impact generated by the factories in the architecture and culture of the local society, both at the peak of the factories' operation and after they ceased to operate. In this way, the survey shows how the territory where the cotton mills operated is now, housing its ruins and presenting the initiatives of other industrial segments to revive textile production, thus generating a new type of impact on the region.
