Abstract

The representation of women, over the years, has been associated to a being who was born with the purpose of building a family and also with an utopian reality where there is, over them, a desire to be a mother and a maternal instinct rooted in them. Nowadays, even with all the independence conquered by women, this imposition still persists. Considering the concepts that society has always been imposing in women about the idea that their place in the world is to take care of the home and bear children, this article aims to understand the concept of women and mothers in the face of society's history and the effects on contemporary women and mothers. For this, a narrative review was carried out, with a qualitative approach and explanatory origin, through data collection through the synthesis of books and articles from databases such as SciELO, CAPES, BVs and Google Scholar in the period from 2011 to 2021. Obtaining as results what society understands as the concept of women and maternity and how this concept can influence the experience of these women during this time.
