Abstract

The Recife borough emerged on the isthmus (now island) as a village, still during the 16th century, being inhabited by the workers of the port which was located there. Throughout the years, the district has gone through countless transformations. Multiple embankments made it expand towards the sea and the river. However, it was during the 20th century that the biggest and most brutal transformation happened, completely modifying part of the neighborhood and tearing down what existed there to build a modern city from scratch, like what was being done at the current-time Federal Capital city, Rio de Janeiro. This transformation, in turn, was inspired by Haussmann’s renovation of Paris. This article proposes a study to comprehend the logic of the old borough’s formation and the motives for the Urban Renovation that missconfigurated it. The methodology utilized was bibliographical research and searching, using descriptors, from articles found on the website Google Scholar. The descriptors used for the research were Urbanism, Urban Renovation, Historic Heritage and Devastation.

Key-words: Urbanism. Urban Renovation. Historic Heritage. Devastation. Destruction.
