Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of liver cancer and represents a significant challenge for public health worldwide, especially in countries where hepatitis B and C, as well as excessive alcohol consumption, are prevalent. The problem of HCC involves multiple factors: its high mortality rate, its often late diagnosis and the complexity of its treatment. In this scenario, the purpose of this research was to discuss the role of biomarkers in the initial detection of hepatocellular carcinoma, emphasizing the relevance of blood therapy support in treatment. This research is an exploratory descriptive literature review, in which Google Scholar, Scielo, the Virtual Health Library, PubMed and ScienceDirect were used as search tools. Publications from the last 10 years (2014-2024) considered most compatible with the topic were selected, and after pre-selecting the publications, scientific articles, books and official government documents were read and analyzed. Based on the bibliographic research carried out, the importance of biomarkers in the early identification of hepatocellular carcinoma was highlighted, especially alpha-fetoprotein, as well as the relevance of haemotherapy support with the use of blood components and blood products in surgical procedures and liver resections, in order to prevent future complications. This research emphasized the complexity and seriousness of this type of cancer, demonstrating the need for advances in early diagnosis using oncological biomarkers and highlighting the relevance of the blood bank in all therapeutic support.
